Its in times like this we as Potomac Middle School really show our Strength, our Courage, and our love for our community.

Welcome to our 8th grade Physical Science Webpage.
My name is Dustin SmithWest and I am your 8
th grade science teacher. As you know I started in January 2020. I know it has been challenging getting to understand and adapt to my teaching styles, as I prefer a hands on learning approach, not a death by PowerPoint teacher.

Now a little about me and my background. I am originally from the great state of Louisiana. I was born and raised in a small town called Deville. My graduating high school class had less than 75 students. After attending high school I went Louisiana State University (LSU). After LSU I went to Kaplan University where I received my Bachelors in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Homeland Security followed by a Masters in Homeland Security Administration. After college I was accepted into the United States Secret Service(USSS) which brought me to the DC area.  I had the distinct privilege of being assigned to President Obama’s daughter’s detail.   After President Obama left office, I transitioned intelligent work with INTERPOL, an International Criminal Police Organization.  While assigned to INTERPOL, I worked in the Human Trafficking /Child Exploitation Unit followed by the Counterterrorism Unit.  I absolutely loved working for the USSS and INTERPOL, but ultimately my family came first.

In 2011 I married my wonderful husband Loren, who is also in Law Enforcement and works for a local police department here in Northern Virginia. We always wanted to start a family and eventually made the decision to become foster parents. Loren and I have fostered over 17 children in our home from infants to teenagers. Finally, in 2017, and being in foster care for 985 days, we had the pleasure of adopting three beautiful siblings who had been in our home for well over a year. Our oldest son is 14 years old, followed by his brother who is 10 and younger sister who is 9. I have always had a passion for  helping children and through my experience with law enforcement, social services and educational systems, I knew I wanted to do more. I started out volunteering at each of our kid’s schools and eventually became a part time substitute teacher.  The majority of my time has been spent teaching at Potomac Middle School where last year I taught 7th grade World History. Potomac Middle School has been a great experience and I have found the staff here to be genuine and excited to teach young minds.  With that said, when the 8th grade Science position became available, I knew what my calling was.

So Again Welcome to 8th Grade Physical Science. On this page you will find updates on all assignments, worksheets, and SOL review information.

On a personal note, I choose to give my students the last two weeks as an adjustment period and not assign any class work.  We all have had to make changes in our homes to accommodate recent worldly events.  I pray that each and everyone of you and your family’s are healthy and have the tools and necessities they need.  Just know that you are never alone and we are all in this together.

The assignments from here on out that I will post is an opportunity to continue your education and provide you all a chance to make improvements to your current grades.  I am here to help you succeed and make the best out of this and any situation.  Family is not just blood, and you all are a part of my family.

Keep the faith and as I always say everyday in class, “give grace when grace is needed.”  Please feel free to reach out to me for anything at all....
