We will review both Civics and Economics until the end of the school year.

Week of March 23-27, 2020
  • Review of Public Goods and Services : read pp. 174-175 in the textbook
  • Be able to answer the following:
  • How is the government different from private businesses?
  • What are some positive and negative consequences of a government continuing to provide goods and services, even if they are unprofitable?
  • Name two services provided by the government that benefit the American people.
  • Think of private businesses that sell some of the same services the government provides. List the businesses and explain the differences between the services.
  • Name one of the government's oldest and largest agencies.
  • How does the government pay for the goods and services it provides to the public?
  • Inquiring Minds:
  • The Branches of the Military-- Identify the five branches of the military
  • Know what each branch does/is responsible for.
  • Choose one branch and find out the following about it

           a. when started    b. slogan/motto   c. responsibilities   d. significant accomplishments/battles

 

  • Review the Circular Flow of the Economy: read pp. 162-163 in the textbook
  • Be able to answer the following:
  • Carefully examine the diagram.
  • You wake up in your "household" and your parent/guardian gives you a few dollars for a snack after school. Which arrow out of the household shows you spending money at the convenience store after school?
  • Which arrow shows the money leaving the product market and going to the businesses?
  • Which arrow shows the money leaving the businesses and being paid to the human resource truck driver?
  • Which arrow shows the money coming from the truck driver back to his household, where tomorrow he can give his kid a couple of dollars for a snack after school?
  • Looking at your previously written notes, create a new graphic organizer using pictures and symbols.

On TUESDAYS, starting tomorrow, I will hold office hours. Office hours will be from 1:30-3:00pm.  TOMORROW, April 14th, for office hours, I will review with you all the procedures for when we hold class on THURSDAYS.

Tuesday, April 14, 2020 UPDATE!!

Students,

Thank you to those of you who were able to join our ZOOM meetings. It was so nice seeing you all. Here is the information that was discussed.

 

1. The marking period ends next week and grades are due next Friday, April 24th.

2. Please check your grades in student vue!   This is YOUR responsibility. 

3. If you failed (60% or lower) or did not take the last unit test (SOLs 11 & 12) you may take or retake that test. The test will be in power test starting this Thursday at 2pm. The test will close next Wednesday, April 22nd at 3pm.

Look on my web page (Files & documents link) for notes if you do not have your notes with you.

4. If you failed (60% or lower) or did not take any of the benchmark review quick checks (there were 5!)  you may take or retake those quick checks. The quick checks will be in power test starting this Friday at noon.  Quick checks will close next Wednesday, April 22nd at 3pm.

YOU MUST CHECK YOUR GRADES TO SEE IF YOU NEED TO TAKE AND OR RETAKE THE LAST UNIT TEST AND ANY OF THE BENCHMARK QUICK CHECKS. 


I will place on my school web page the names of the test and quick checks so you know which to complete.


  ALL must be completed by next Wednesday, April 22, 2020 by 3pm!!

Good morning students,

Thank you to those who showed up for our ZOOM class today. It was great seeing so many of you. Today we reviewed what taxes are, who pays them, and we learned about the three types of taxes and the level(s) of government that collect each. We also learned about the amendment authorizing Congress to collect taxes.

The power point was emailed earlier this week and it is also on my class web page--- SOL 13c.( files & documents link) Review it. 

We will continue next Thursday with Taxes.



Here are some reminders:

1. Class Instruction is on Thursdays at 8:30. I will email/message if there is a time change i.e: 9am instead of 8:30am. 

2. ZOOM link emailed weeks ago, SEVERAL TIMES, and also placed in TEAMS messenger weeks ago. FIND IT. The link is the same for each class; it does not change. Go through your emails and TEAMS messages. I am NOT responding to emails/messages about the link. 

3. Come with paper and something to write with. 

4. Show up to class on time please. I will give a grace period of  a few minutes then I will begin class. When you come late, it is a distraction for me as I'm teaching to allow you in. I admitted some of you who were very late today. I will not do so moving forward. 

5. Enter our ZOOM class with your full name displayed. If not displayed, I will not admit you. I don't know who you are by nicknames etc.  Please try to have your cameras on.

6. Check email/class web page (civics & econ 8th grade link) on Mondays/Tuesdays and Thursdays for any updates.

Hello all. I will hold office hours on Tuesday at 1:30pm. If you have questions, stop by. On Thursday at 8:30, we will continue with last week's lesson on taxes SOL 13c. Find the power point in the files and documents link.

Please be on time on Thursday. Follow the guidelines provided for our ZOOM meetings. I emailed those out last week and previous weeks ago. If you can not follow the guidelines you will be removed from our ZOOM class.

Week of May 10-15, 2020

I trust that everyone is doing well. This Thursday, May 14, 2020 we will study the Federal Reserve System (FED) SOL 13d. I am also placing the power point in the documents link.

I may have to push class back to 9am on Thursday, but I will let you know.

Once again, Tuesday's office hours is only IF you need to come online to ask me questions at 1:30pm. If there are no questions, I will see you on Thursday.
