Course Description

Students design, establish, and operate a small-group or class business, producing a service or product that meets an identified school or community need. Emphasis is placed on the introduction and application of business terminology, basic entrepreneurship concepts, and fundamental business principles. Basic academic skills (mathematics, science, English, and history/social science) and Microsoft Office skills are integrated into this course.

Classroom (“Office”) Expectations

Excellent communication skills are essential in the business world.  To practice these skills, students will treat our classroom as a formal office and use a professional manner of speech at all times.  Time management is another skill critical to success in business.  Students are expected to be seated in class on time and prepared to participate.  Assignments and due dates will be posted on the class webpage. Students should check it regularly, especially during absences, to ensure that they are current in their work.

Required Daily Supplies

Students should have their agenda, paper, and pencil/pen every class period to take notes.  Students will have school-based Microsoft 365 accounts.  This will allow them access to email and at-home downloads of Office products.  Students will need one pocket folder with the three-prong center to hold their business notebook and that will remain in the classroom.  A corporate binder will be provided to each “company.”

89 - 87 = B+

79 – 77= C+

69 – 67= D+

59 and below = F

A variety of assessments will be used to determine grades.  The academic grades will be based upon a combination of formative assessments (class work, homework, quick checks), worth 20% of the course grade and summative assessments (quizzes, tests, individual and group projects), worth 80% of the course grade.  Students may retake summative assessments within five days of the original assessment date.

Students will be assessed in two other categories: Conduct and Effort/Work Habits.  These will reflect achievement of O, S, or U—Outstanding, Satisfactory, or Unsatisfactory.

To measure the effectiveness of curriculum implementation, department and/or course examinations have been developed to reflect the objectives in the curriculum.  These assessments will assist students and teachers with monitoring and understanding content mastery.

Assignments that have specific due dates are due on those dates.  All assignments must be typed unless otherwise noted.  Assignments not completed within our class time will become homework and are due at the beginning of the next class.  Late assignments will be accepted until the retake of the summative assessment.

Make-Up Policy

If a student is absent, he or she will have one class period to make-up any missed work for excused absences.  If the student is out of school for a lengthy absence, other arrangements can be made for catching up on missed assignments, quizzes and tests.  It is the responsibility of the student to keep track of all work that is due.
